The Mimiwhangata peninsula lies 50km north of Whangarei on the east coast. Rimariki Island and its surrounding rocky pinnacles, and the nearby Wide Berth Islands provide a cluster of striking offshore islands in close proximity to the peninsula. Mimiwhangata has been a Marine Park since 1984 and is home to a wide variety of specialized habitats. Scientific studies have found examples of almost every shallow marine habitat on Northland's east coast, and a series of complex deep reef systems of biodiversity further offshore. The area is now proposed for protection as a Full Protected Marine Reserve due to its high ecological value. Above sea level, Mimiwhangata peninsula is also in Reserve status as a Coastal Farm Park. Long white sand beaches separated by rocky headlands are a feature of the area.
